"You're really good at receiving."

Hi Reader,

We were gathered in her living room. A small group of women circled, sitting in chairs and sofas around her fireplace. I had no idea what I was there for, but I already trusted her. I'd had several private sessions, and I'd already sent my friends to her. That was how much I trusted her and felt connected. So I was all in.

We gathered one night a month, and she shared with us her nine tools for accomplishing anything in life. This was the first night, and we were going to learn what I assumed was the first tool.

And then she began discussing what we do as women. It was such an aha and a gulp, recognizing how we do-do-do, and deflect, deflect, deflect, and give, give, give, until there's nothing left in the tank. So she said, this first tool may feel foreign, but it is innate and biological and one of the most natural things for women.

Off of our questioning looks, she said:

"Receive."

Our eyebrows raised as this word absorbed the oxygen in the room.

"To create anything in your life, you must receive. If you don't receive it, it's not coming," she said with such conviction that there was another collective gulp.

She gave us exercises to do for the following month, such as saying yes when the grocery store attendant asked if we wanted help carrying our bags to the car (back when they did this every time you bought groceries). The conditioned responses were always along the lines: 'No, I got it. I can handle it.'

She suggested using the word " receive” in our regular dialogue. “I'd like to receive a cup of coffee. I'd like to receive help with this project. I'd like to receive a moment of your time. I'd like to receive…”

"See what happens," she said.

A month later, we all came back aflutter with the internal shifts that had happened after living in receiving mode, and how foreign and uncomfortable it was to receive.

That was 17 years ago.

Yes, it was about 17 years ago that I first sat in that room and learned the “Receive” tool from Andrea Quinn, who is still a mentor of mine and one of my dearest friends.

And the subsequent eight tools that comprise “The Quinn Essentials” were just as enlightening, eye-opening, and life-altering. I have returned time and again to her workshops, each time learning something new and deeper.

Receiving is now a part of my constant awareness. It’s in my language. “Thank you, I will receive that,” I often say, and often people notice. So then I start talking about receiving, and it opens things up for them, too.

Recently, while on a date with a man I’d seen a few times, we were at a restaurant in conversation, when he leaned forward and said, “You know, you are really good at receiving.”

It gave me chills, because it took me a while to truly get receiving. Now, it’s innate. I said, “Thank you. I'll receive that.”

I called Andrea immediately afterward and relayed the story to her, “You’re not going to believe what this man said to me.” We laughed at the simple truth of it all.

Andrea has taught these tools to thousands of women, going from that once-a-month, nine-month program to what is now a powerful weekend workshop.

And, she's written an internationally bestselling book that expands her curriculum with incredible stories of women living and thriving with the tools.

I'm sharing this with you because this fall, she is hosting her last in-person weekends. To say it’s incredible to be in this amazing woman's presence for a weekend is an understatement.

And I'm sharing this with you because these nine tools now are my life's curriculum; that may sound trite, but it's true. And this first tool of receiving is the foundation for everything.

I know as a woman, I am here to receive and create. So my continual inquiry is, what can I receive to create? What can I receive in this conversation? What can I receive to help me move forward with this relationship?

I believe in this so much and have sent so many women over the years into the Quinn world that I became one of her certified coaches. I share it with as many people as I can because it's enriched my life in so many ways.

It all started in her living room, 17 years ago. This fall, she's doing it two more times, once in Los Angeles and once in New York.

shift everything. 💫

Andrea says, “Receiving is in breath. And if we're not receiving, all we're doing is exhaling and running out of energy.”

Receiving is not the same as taking. Receiving is generous; receiving is also giving to the other person. Receiving is the one side of the Mobius, one side of the infinity. Receiving allows you the energy and the flow to give even more.

It all starts with receiving. It’s the ultimate self-care. Receiving is true feminine power.

Receiving is a gift.

Hey Reader! Every day is a day for love. This week contains THE day of love, according to St. Valentine and card designers at Hallmark. Perhaps celebrating Valentine's Day does cause us to think about love, to express love, to feel love, all the more. If it does, yay. I was blessed to share time this week with the full extension of my nucleus family. What a joy! Four generations all together. It was the first time we have all gathered since the birth of my two great-nephews in August and...
